The biggest asset in any organisation is the people; the biggest asset they have is their health and wellbeing – so it makes good business sense for you to look after it.
In the UK, only a small percentage of employees feel engaged in their day-to-day work, this is a worrying figure as employee engagement is a key driver of business performance, productivity and engagement. As we increasingly incorporate digital technology into our daily personal and professional lives we are processing more information than ever before. People are available 24/7 it can be hard to know when to switch off.
The links between work and personal life become blurred and stress can increase, which in turn can reduce employee productivity and have a negative impact on employee wellbeing.
It is suggested that when the following four needs are met at work, we are happier.
Physical – the chance to regularly recharge at work.
Emotional – the need to feel valued for our contributions at work.
Mental – the ability to be able to focus on our work and having the flexibility to decide when, where and how we get the work done.
Spiritual – the chance to do what we enjoy and feeling connected to a higher purpose at work in order to make a difference.
How people are managed on a daily basis is crucial in supporting their health and wellbeing. Managers – as leaders, coaches and role models – play a vital role in establishing the culture of an organisation and they can in influence outcomes, positively or negatively.
In order to correctly deal with health and wellbeing issues – from sickness absence to alcohol abuse, remote working to rehabilitation – managers need to be clear about what is expected of them and made aware of the tools and sources of support available to them.Employees are 12% more productive when they’re happy.

When we are feeling positive we are more creative and have the ability to better solve problems. Although technology is the very thing that is causing many people to stretch themselves too far, it is also the thing that many individuals are using to try to de-stress and increasing their happiness both inside and outside the workplace.
