Your emotions this festive period

For some people, Christmas isn’t the most wonderful time of the year.

Back

It can be full of pressure and sadness, and generally be a bit overwhelming.

If you find yourself feeling a bit overwhelmed with aspects of the festive season, there are small things you can do to help.

As the big day gets closer, there may be an increased pressure to spend money you may not have on presents that people may not want or need. Why not have an open discussion with the people in your life and explain that you aren’t going to be doing presents this year? You may find they were feeling exactly the same and will be pleased that you’re relieving the burden from you both.

Or instead of buying presents, why not try your hand at making something? If you’re not very creative, it could be something as simple as a jar of freshly made pickle. You’ll be saving money and saving any waste, and you may even come up with some really thoughtful presents for the people you love.

If you find yourself feeling sad at Christmas, remember to manage your expectations – the majority of people’s Christmases aren’t like how they’re shown in films, or even on social media. Don’t let Christmas activities interrupt the routine that works for you – if it’s important you make that spin class, then don’t be afraid of having to leave that work Christmas lunch slightly early to make it. If think you may be suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) then read our tips in this previous post here. And finally, don’t be afraid to ask for help if you think you may be struggling.
